This usually points to the contactor rather than the thermostat itself. Pitted contacts on the contactor fail to carry the voltage, even if the thermostat is pulling in correctly.
It is because of the loose connection between the heating coil, thermostat, and power cord. This can be resolved by just tightening the wires or removing any corrosion.
It varies, but the average life span of a heating element is between three and five years. Heavy commercial use also greatly reduces the life expectancy of the elements.
Make sure that the control knob and all connections are secure on the non-heating side and not covered with grease or debris. If they are all secure, the issue is most likely with the wiring or heating element on that side.
